Schools in Tibet

Education is the most important gift we can offer to the Tibetan people that will help them access a better future. Since 2001, Karuna-Shechen has supported over twelve co-educational elementary and middle schools in nomadic areas in eastern Tibet.

In these remote areas the families are mostly nomads and farmers, and the children can only receive an education at boarding schools. Karuna-Shechen provides meals, accommodations, salaries for the teachers, and equipment (when needed), and also supports basic operations in many of the schools.

Classes are conducted in Chinese with a strong focus on the Tibetan language throughout the curriculum. Over 1,500 students from poor nomadic families receive a free education in our schools. Construction of an earthquake-resistant school is planned for 2012.

Karuna-Shechen's largest school, Gedun Choepel, boards and educates 800 children, and was voted best in the region for academic achievement.

These schools are often the only possibility these children have to receive an education. Learning in both Tibetan and Chinese languages preserves their heritage and provides them with a better opportunity to go on to higher education.

Please help us continue to provide education for Tibetan children who are disadvantaged in their own country.
